20 participants have been selected to carry out the workshop from August 25 to September 6 on Living on the Cliff. Analysis of the troglodytic habitat and rural depopulation in the Mediterranean. Students come from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, Italy and France. Thanks to ACEID, 10 scholarships have been awarded for being countries in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.

This workshop is the starting point of a broad international project. Research, documentation and preservation of cultural heritage project on the trogoloditic habitat in the Mediterranean basin.

The objective of this project, led by RehabiMed, UNICA, EPSEB-UPC and ICOMOS Spain, is to systematically study this typology of trogolditic architecture throughout the Mediterranean basin and analyze the opportunities it offers in its preservation for various functions.

The Project wants to focus primarily on the use of natural gaps in the geology of the cliffs (caves, shelters caves), carrying out an extensive study aimed at establishing a comparison between different habitats, with their own characteristics, throughout the Mediterranean basin.

Goals:

  • Document and value the different habitats studied
  • Define a methodology for collecting information to carry out an Inventory of Troglodyte Heritage in the Mediterranean Basin
  • Identify and show the bioclimatic values ​​of this type of natural habitat
  • Define strategies and instruments for the sustainable revitalization of this troglodyte heritage, preventing it from falling into abandonment or being overexploited for tourism purposes
