moderato cantabile is a performance promoted by RehabiMed and ETSALS-Universitat Ramon Llull, in which there is the will to collectively integrate and in the same protest act, the defense of individual freedom, with special attention to women. The action, carried out on October 23, 2022, at 5:00 p.m., is directly linked to the demonstrations held in Iran, following the death of Masha Amini, last September 2022. The event invites you to interact and cutting the threads transforming the existing space, just as these women cut their hair as a symbol of protest. An action that wants to position itself, from the School of Architecture, in the defense of human rights and with the desire for holistic and inclusive knowledge, which provides sufficient tools to blur the limits between past and present and between cultures and territories.

The space chosen to carry out the action is the Jardí dels Tarongers, at the top of the Raval in Barcelona and is the patio of the old House of Mercy, also called the Royal Hospice and Refuge of Barcelona; an institution that dates back to the 16th century and was governed by the Authority, exercising coercion and repression, through forced confinement and social rehabilitation, through work. A women’s institution for many decades. In the southern part of the patio, religious-festive events were held and this is the area of the patio chosen to carry out the performance. The action takes place in a void among the trees, recipient of the collective memory of many generations, which integrates ephemeral architecture, dance and music. Theatrical resources are used that involve, in an ephemeral, humble, collective and also intimate experience, a heterogeneous group, which is actively linked in its creation and development: students of the Architecture degree, teachers and architects of the ETSALS, members of RehabiMed, neighborhood associations, families who live and/or work in the Raval, visitors, curious people, vagabonds, friends, etc. A protest and artistic activity, of a very simple nature, that involves the active participation of people from the neighborhood and that affects the environment in a real way.
