TRADITIONAL MEDITERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE
This book presents the traditional architecture (local, pre-industrial, non-monumental and often neglected) that characterises our Mediterranean regions. Within this common space, a variety of multifaceted identities have produced a great diversity of architectural forms and construction techniques. The product of the Mediterranean environment, they came into being and developed in keeping with specific geological, topological, climatic, economic and social environments. The historic richness of these societies and their extension throughout the Mediterranean area produced a whole range of cities, villages and houses that are constantly being renewed. The processes of transformation, formerly slow and limited, have been accelerated by industrialisation and the large-scale invasion of modern materials and techniques in the past few years due to the explosion of tourism, raising many urgent issues.
Traditional architecture is considered here as a transmissible heritage and a real-estate value: worth and use. It is a place of meeting, working and resting: an organic space which always holds the activities and everyday life of Mediterranean people. It is a significant factor for social and economic development, and nourishes the identity of its peoples. Rehabilitation and sometimes protection are essential to keep this heritage alive: our richness and diversity of landscapes, our ways of living in a spatial and temporal continuity.
