RehabiMed: Rehabilitation of Traditional Mediterranean Architecture


The RehabiMed project forms part of Euromed Heritage, the European culture programme that came into being after the 1995 Barcelona conference, which set out to create a space of peace and prosperity throughout the Mediterranean basin.

This project is led and coordinated by the Col·legi d'Aparelladors i Arquitectes Tècnics de Barcelona and directed by Xavier Casanovas Boixereu.
 

RehabiMed's objectives   

  • To strengthen rehabilitation and maintenance as factors of sustainable development (social, economic and environmental) in all Mediterranean countries.

  • To contribute to improvements in the living conditions of a broad spectrum of the Mediterranean population.

  • To preserve the historical and cultural identity of traditional Mediterranean architecture.

  • To create synergies and transnational networks of experts in the various fields of building rehabilitation and maintenance.
 

Working Areas

I. Knowledge and methodology.
The development of tools, strategies and methodologies of rehabilitation.

II. Training and knowledge transfer.
Dissemination of the tools developed as part of training activities.

III. Pilot operations.
Experimentation and demonstration of the possibilities and effects of a good rehabilitation policy.

 

Vectors of rehabilitation

In its seminars and pilot operations, RehabiMed concentrates its work on four basic vectors of rehabilitation:

  • Rehabilitation and urban landscape: Lefkara (Cyprus).

  • Rehabilitation and artisans: Cairo (Egypt).

  • Rehabilitation and sustainable tourism: Kairouan (Tunisia).

  • Rehabilitation and social measures: Marrakech (Morocco).
 

Target public

  • Politicians and government experts at national, regional and
    local levels.
  • The agents of rehabilitation and maintenance.
  • Professionals, builders, artisans, academics and
    manufacturers.
  • The users and inhabitants of traditional architecture.
 

Expected results

The creation of a large body of international research in the form of experiences in the rehabilitation and maintenance of traditional architecture in the fields of legislation, management and techniques.

The establishing and use of a multidisciplinary working methodology for the rehabilitation and sustainable maintenance of buildings.

The training of rehabilitation experts skilled in the application of the established methodology to be promoted among all professionals in the sector.

The organization of four pilot operations in order to compare and contrast the methodology and provide practical training grounds for experts.

The organization of multiple actions (training, dissemination and debate) about rehabilitation and maintenance.

The production of informative publications about different aspects of the established working methodology and the interesting experiences it identifies.
