They range from the Green Guerrillas in New York, when the financial crisis brought down many of the buildings in Manhattan, to Aldo Van Eyck’s interventions in Amsterdam, after the destruction of half of the city as a result of World War II bombings. The object of this installation is to highlight the capacity of a collective to carry out these actions in an urban setting with the sole aim of improving the wellbeing and enjoyment of the community in question. The exhibition uses its images to showcase the search for a kind of urbanness that has yet to be defined, which is mutating, permanently under construction and reconstruction—the definition of any living city. The photographs in the exhibition were shown at the Foundation in 2002 and were a central feature of the first exhibition in the Hassan II Pavilion. The traditional Maghreb is presented in photographs and four video montages showing everyday rural and urban life in the early 20th century. The material used was produced by the Albert Khan teams in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria between 1910 and 1931.

“Lines of Gold”

The exhibition “Lines of Gold” opened last 11 December at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, in Madrid. It forms part of the “Turkish Viewpoints” programme of Turkish-Spanish cultural meetings. The exhibition will run until 2 March 2008 and includes 96 pieces from the collection of the Sakip Sabanci Museum in Istanbul, reflecting Turkey’s rich tradition of calligraphy. This is the first time that these masterworks of Arabic writing from the 15th to 20th centuries have been exhibited outside their country of origin.
