RehabiMed has set up a practical laboratory of regional participation in which the appropriate conditions will be created to test and contrast the effectiveness of the various protocols of action and the methodology developed in the course of RehabiMed's work.
This laboratory focuses on four lines of heritage protection and economic development. They are four quite distinct lines, all related to the specific reality and problems of the places chosen but representative of similar situations throughout the Mediterranean region.
The areas of intervention in the eastern subregion of the Mediterranean are Lefkara (Cyprus) and Cairo (Egypt), and those in the western subregion are Kairouan (Tunisia) and Marrakech (Morocco).
The rehabilitation work carried out in these four cities will make a major impact, since it will prove that the objectives of the RehabiMed project can be achieved and that it is possible to invert the dynamics of degradation and abandonment of the vast storehouse of Mediterranean heritage.
It will have a direct effect on the local development of pilot cities and, at the same time, the experience will be extended to other places in the same country and the entire Mediterranean area.
The person in charge of the historical documentation, research and dissemination, providing back-up to the experts' networks and the pilot operations, is Montserrat Villaverde. |
