Al-Magraby wekala generates a sense of expectancy. 9 May 2008
On 9 May, the European Commissioner for Culture and Education, Jàn Figel, the European Union Ambassador in Egypt, Klaus Ebermann, the Director of AIDCO and the Head of the Directorate General of Education and Culture visited the workshops of artisans and the dwellings in Al-Magraby wekala, renovated by RehabiMed. The visit was a response to the anticipation generated by this complex intervention in Islamic Cairo, which has become a model for other wekalas requiring urgent work.
A concern with the generally poor state of traditional heritage in Cairo, the lack of public investment in rehabilitation and policies that do not actively promote social cohesion have led to a general neglect of heritage by its users. From the outset, RehabiMed tabled the need to include a maintenance manual in the rehabilitation project that actively and positively involves all users.
